Rumble In The City

By
Alex Farough

DETECTIVE TOM stands above a chalk outline of a man’s mangled body on the sidewalk. He’s a stalky man with a large build. He’s gazing deeply at the figure on the ground as if he can recall something vague. A lab assistant named OSWALD FINES is next to him kneeling on the ground analyzing the body from that perspective. Both men appear to be transfixed in their work with determination rampant to accomplish the task at hand. The body has a noticeable tattoo on the underside of the right forearm of a scorpion. Camera shows a wide shot with all three in it.
OSWALD FINES
So what do you figure it was here? Suicide?
FINES glances up at TOM who hasn’t moved. Camera is a low angle shot where FINES is depicted in front of TOM.
DETECTIVE TOM
Camera reverse of the previous shot.
That’d be the fourth one in three weeks in this side of town.
FINES
With doubt in his voice. Camera back to second angle.
Yeah, so?
TOM
With anger gradually running more rampant in his voice, then dying down to just over a whisper at the end. During which FINES is standing and examining more details from first responders on the scene. Camera is a wide shot from roughly 20 feet away. Casually panning in as TOM gets more and more intense.
It doesn’t add up! He’s the fourth one. He’s even got the mark of the Friole’s! This just proves that there is something happening amongst the gangs ‘round here. We just need to prove if it was the Ecants, or the Poutns. This damn gang war is destroying the city and scaring away all the people! We need tourism in order to continue this way of life, OS. But with people dying here and there every other week, we’re just going to have to move on.
FINES
With a little curiosity and great sarcasm. Camera is a close shot on FINES’ head.
Or figure out some hard evidence of which of the gangs had done it. Then the whole mess could be wiped away. Bit by Bit.
TOM
Rushing over to FINES to grab him in the front by the arms, and look into his eyes. Standing slightly hunched over as if greatly excited. Camera follows TOM as he traverses the five-foot distance between HIM and FINES.
That is exactly what we’re going to do.

Terrorism in America

About 8:30 pm outside. High angle panning over a large crowd gathered for an outdoor concert. A few people assorted throughout the crowd have backpacks, but no one seems to be suspicious. JOHN DOE is one of them with a backpack. He stands near the middle left of the entire crowd around the stage (close shot with eye-level angle). JOHN DOE seems fairly nervous.
JOHN DOE
(As voice over)
I don’t know if I can do this. This is just crazy. Look at all the people… I can’t hurt them. They never did anything bad to me.
Wide shot of the crowd from JD’s point of view starting with the stage and the band performing, over to the rest of the audience of at least two thousand. Everybody seems to be partying, and having a great time. Medium shot high angle of JD from back pointing towards the stage. HIS mood and tone is changing along with the attitude of the speech all throughout.
JOHN DOE
(As voice over)
This just seems terrible! But no… I’ve got a mission to do. It is my right. No, my right! Through my religion! To do this, I’ll be accepted into heaven.
HE glances again at all the people in the crowd. Wide shot of crowd panning to right from JOHN DOE’s point of view. They appear to be more solemn in accordance to the ballad now playing by the band. Lighters go up in the crowd all over, waving around in beat with the slow tempo of the piece.
JOHN DOE
(As voice over)
I can’t do this! I can’t hurt all these people. Their sins can’t be that great…
Then JD comes to a sudden realization, portrayed through an extreme close up shot of his eye, where his eye widens.
JOHN DOE
(As voice over)
It’s not even up to me now. The remote detonator!
HE glances at his watch through point of view shot. 8:38.
JOHN DOE
(As voice over)
I’ve only got two minutes to get rid of the bomb in the backpack!
JD attempts to run as quickly as possible through the crowd, towards a nearby lake, pushing and shoving people aside as necessary. Medium shot from a high angle, keeping the same distance away from JD as he tries to move through the crowd. It’s too late though. The bomb explodes, captured in a wide shot of the whole concert area. The explosion covers about 25% of the whole area. People are running and screaming to get away from the damage. The majority of the crowd moves towards the back of the plaza.
